Chess: Evolved!
A downloadable game for Windows
Pieces now have Health (HP)!
- Pieces have HP equal to their material value (except the King, which has 10 HP).
Pieces now have Attack values (ATK)!
- Pieces have ATK equal to their material value (except Spearman & Overlord).
Pieces can now Evolve!
- Evolved Pieces are worth 2x their initial value when captured.
Pieces now have Actions & Abilities!
- Actions include all standard Piece Movement & most Abilities.
- Players take 1 Action each turn (unless otherwise stated).
- Abilities are either Active or Passive!
Active Abilities are selected by the player.
- These usually cost an Action.
Passive Abilities
- Always in effect or have specific triggers for when/ how to activate.
- These always cost no Action and are triggered.
- Pieces unlock Abilities when they Evolve!

Evolved Pieces
SPEARMAN:
- HP: 2
- ATK: 2
- Lined (adjacent via the same Diagonal, File, or Rank).
- Value = 2
Ability: Omni-Movement (Active).
- Can move 1 Square in any direction.
- Costs an Action.
Ability: Skewer (Passive)
- Skewers enemy pieces and walls, it captures.
- Deals 2 damage to Pieces (behind the skewered Piece).
- Does not harm your Pieces.
- Costs no Action each turn.
- Deals 2 damage to Pieces (behind the skewered Piece).
- Skewer length = # of Lined Spearman.
- (e.g., Lined Spearman = 3)
- Skewer extends 3 Squares behind the 1st captured Piece.
- (e.g., Lined Spearman = 3)
MOUNTED ARCHER:
- HP: 6
- ATK: 6
- Value = 6
Ability: Trick Shot (Passive)
- After moving, this Piece can now fire an arrow at any Piece/ Wall positioned 1 Knight’s move away from it.
- Costs no Action each turn.
CARDINAL:
- HP: 6
- ATK: 6
- Value = 6
Ability: Resurrect (Active)
- The player can forgo their Action, on a turn, to return any previously captured standard Piece (besides the King).
- The resurrected Piece returns to its starting square or the nearest adjacent square (if the starting square is occupied).
- Can only Resurrect Pieces ≤ the Cardinal’s captured value.
TREBUCHET:
- HP: 10
- ATK: 10
- Value = 10
Ability: Lob/ Hurl (Active)
- The player can forgo moving this turn to deal 3 damage to any target along its file or rank.
- Pieces on adjacent squares to the target also take 1 damage.
- Costs an Action.
VALKYRIE:
- HP: 18
- ATK: 18
- Value = 18
Ability: Fly (Active)
- Can Leap over other Pieces (like a Knight), to capture enemy Pieces on adjacent capture points (i.e., its current Diagonals, Ranks & Files).
- Costs an Action.
OVERLORD:
- HP: 20
- ATK: 0
- Can no longer attack/ capture Pieces.
- Value = Enemy Match Win
Ability: Fortify (Active)
- Once per game, summons up to 8 Walls (adjacent to one another).
- One Wall must be placed at most 2 squares (from the Overlord).
- Costs no Action.
- Wall:
- HP: 3
- ATK: 0
- Value = N/A
- Each Wall grants adjacent ally Pieces +3 HP.
- Certain Abilities/ Pieces bypass Walls.
- Ranged attacks, such as the Mounted Archer’s Trick Shot or Trebuchet’s Lob.
- Pieces with Fly or that Leap (like a Knight).
- 2 or more Lined Spearman.
- All other Pieces that attack a Wall are captured, dealing 1 damage (to ‘that’ Wall).
Ability: Teleport (Active)
- Can move to any empty square on the board, once each turn.
- Costs no Action.
How To Play
- Players play 1 Match = Best of 3 Games against one another.
- Standard rules related to Draws, Stalemates, Checks, and Checkmates still apply.
- Ways to Win the Game:
- Checkmating the opponent’s King
- Deal 10 damage (or more) to the opponent’s King.
- Stalemating the opponent’s Overlord.
- Ways to Win a Match:
- Checkmating the opponent’s King (Twice).
- Checkmating the opponent’s Overlord (Once).
- Deal 20 damage (or more) to the opponent’s Overlord.
